Who we are

At Fishing For Firefighters we organize and host fishing trips for firefighters and other first responders as a mental health initiative. Fishing is an age-old pastime that connects people to the natural environment. It engages the mind in a way that provides a perfect distraction from the stresses of everyday life. Fishing is also a meaningful way to connect with peers and bond over a shared activity.

Time interacting with nature is often prescribed for healing of the mind and soul. Fishing is the perfect blend, as it engages the mind in a refreshing way and promotes education of the life and mood of the habitats one engages with. Fishing is already being used widely as a therapeutic way to help people who live with CIS and PTSD.

About the Founder

My name is Tristan O’Brian. I am a passionate outdoorsman, and have been a professional fishing guide for the past ten years.  Currently, I am in the process of becoming a firefighter. I have loved fishing ever since I can remember, and have always particularly loved sharing my passion for the outdoors with others. While in training to become a first responder, I was humbled by the sacrifices made by those who serve our communities to ensure the safety and security we often take for granted. I was also made to see all the challenges that first responders face, the stress and trauma to which their job exposes them. Confronted by the reality that I, too, will face these challenges if I continue on this career path, I know that my love for fishing and the outdoors, together with the comradery I have in the many friends who share my passion, will give me something to fall back on when I feel overwhelmed. I am excited by the idea of sharing this gift with other responders so that they might also experience the rejuvenation of spending time with others in nature, and so add this wonderful past time to their own mental health “toolbox.”
